Geocache Description:

Welcome to Fan Tan Alley - the narrowest street in North America and a portal into Canada's oldest Chinatown, first settled in 1858! At its narrowest point the street is only 0.9 meters (35 inches) wide, so that a child can place a hand on the brick walls on either side. Fan Tan Alley is 73 meters (240 feet) long, running between Fisgard Street and Pandora Avenue. This street is so unique that it's been featured in Hollywood movies and children's books.

Although today Fan Tan Alley is a tourist destination, it wasn't always the kind of place you would want to go for a casual stroll with the family. Back in the mid-1800's the street was a popular place for a variety of less-than-legal activities, with gambling and opium dens common. In fact, the street drew its name from the Chinese gambling game "Fan-Tan". In the late 1970's a revitalization project turned the alley into the popular tourist spot that is it today. It may be so busy on the day you visit that you'll be forced to turn sideways to squeeze through the route.

Please note that the gates to the alley are open between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm each day. Refer to Logging Requirement #2 below as to how you can log a Find regardless of the gates being open or closed. If the gates are closed you will still be able to get a very good view of the alley.

You'll know you're at GZ when you see the sign shown in the picture that I've uploaded to the cache gallery to the left of the map below.

Logging Requirements to Claim This Geocache:

There are 2 logging requirements! Both must be completed.

1. Stand at the posted coordinates and take a picture of yourself with the alley in the background. Post this picture along with your Found log.

Option: If you do not wish to have your face in the photo, submit a picture of a personal item with the alley in the background (GPSr, trackable, piece of paper with your username, or some other Geocaching item).

2. If you are visiting when the gates are open, walk into the alley from the posted coordinates. What is the number on the second door on the right? Email me that number through my geocaching profile or send it through the Message Center. Do not post that number in your log or it will be deleted.
If the gates are closed, look through the gates and take note of a window sill about 6 meters (20 feet) into the alley, and about 1.5 meters (5 feet) off the ground. What color is that window sill? Email me that color through my geocaching profile or send it through the Message Center. Do not post that color in your log or it will be deleted.
