Geocache Description:

"Molly Malone" (also known as "Cockles and Mussels" or "In Dublin's Fair City") is a popular song set in Dublin, Ireland, which has become the unofficial anthem of Dublin.

The Molly Malone statue was unveiled originally in Grafton Street by then Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alderman Ben Briscoe, during the 1988 Dublin Millennium celebrations, when 13 June was declared to be Molly Malone Day. On 18 July 2014, the statue was relocated to Suffolk Street, in front of the Tourist Information Office, to make way for Luas track-laying work to be completed at the old location.

Due to the increase in tourist foot traffic, and a common penchant for being "handsy", the statue has been groped often enough that the bronze hue has begun to wear off on the bosom.

The song tells the fictional tale of a fishmonger who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin, but who died young, of a fever. In the late 20th century a legend grew up that there was a historical Molly, who lived in the 17th century. She is typically represented as a hawker by day and part-time prostitute by night. In contrast she has also been portrayed as one of the few chaste female street-hawkers of her day. There is no evidence that the song is based on a real woman, of the 17th century or any other time. The name "Molly" originated as a familiar version of the names Mary and Margaret. While many such "Molly" Malones were born in Dublin over the centuries, no evidence connects any of them to the events in the song.

TO LOG THIS VIRTUAL

From August 1st 2019 I will delete logs that do not meet the logging requirements so please read carefully!

As stated earlier, tourists do like to get ‘handsy’ With Molly. I can't suggest you do the same (nor can I discourage you) so post a picture in your found it log of you with a hand somewhere on the statue. You could give Molly a hug for example, as who doesn't like a hug?

You MUST touch the statue with your HAND to post a Found It log!

ESP: ¡DEBES tocar la estatua con la MANO!

FR: Vous devez toucher la statue avec votre MAIN!

D: Sie müssen die Statue mit der HAND berühren!!

Do not log it as found until you have the required picture for upload and please do not email it to the CO

LOGS WITHOUT THE REQUIRED PHOTO WILL DISAPPOINT MOLLY AND BE DELETED

Molly Malone

In Dublin's fair city
Where the girls are so pretty
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone
As she wheeled her wheelbarrow
Through the streets broad and narrow
Crying "cockles and mussels,
alive, alive, oh"

Alive, alive, oh
Alive, alive, oh
Crying "cockles and mussels,
alive, alive, oh"

She was a fishmonger
And sure, t'was no wonder
For so were her mother and father before
And they wheeled their barrow
Through the streets broad and narrow
Crying "cockles and mussels,
alive, alive, oh"

Alive, alive, oh
Alive, alive, oh
Crying "cockles and mussels,
alive, alive, oh”

She died of a fever
And sure, so one could save her
And that was the end of sweet Molly Malone
Now her ghost wheels her barrow
Through the streets broad and narrow
Crying "cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh"

Alive, alive, oh
Alive, alive, oh
Crying "cockles and mussels,
alive, alive, oh"
Alive, alive, oh
Alive, alive, oh
Crying "cockles and mussels,
alive, alive, oh"
