Geocache Description:

[EN] The French Revolution of 1791 was the beginning of change throughout Europe. The absolute monarchy was abolished, King Louis XVI lost his absolute royal power, six months later the royal family leave France. In 1793, King Louis XVI executed by guillotine, the throne was inherited by his five-year-old son, Louis XVII. Brother of Louis XVI, Count Louis Stanislas Xavier, became regent. After the boy's death in prison in 1795, he proclaimed himself King Louis XVIII of France.

As the political situation changed, Louis XVIII moved from one country to another several times, until in February 1798 he settled in Jelgava Castle, which Russian Emperor Paul I offered him as a temporary residence. He was accompanied by other members of the royal family, including his younger brother, the later King Charles X of France, and his family. There were about 200-250 people in the royal court of Jelgava. He sought to restore the court ceremonies at Versailles. June 1799, at the Jelgava Castle, the daughter of Louis XVI Marie-Teresa was married to her cousin Dofin Louis Antoine. It is possible that this celebration can be seen in Jean Charles Tardier's painting "Louis XVIII Couronne la rosière de Mitau 1799", a copy of which is in the Jelgava Castle Museum.

In January 1801, Louis XVIII was forced to leave Jelgava because the Russian Emperor Paul I was about to sign a separate peace treaty with France. In 1804, after Napoleon's self-proclamation as Emperor, Louis XVIII asked the Russian Emperor Alexander I for permission to settle in Jelgava Castle again, and in January 1805 he came here as the "Count of Lille" with a suite of 43 people. He lived in Jelgava in rather modest conditions until July 1807, when Alexander I declared that could no longer be guaranteed his safety. Louis XVIII traveled through neutral Sweden to England with some companions.

In April 1814, after the victory of the Coalition forces over Napoleon, Louis XVIII returned to Paris and was officially crowned King of France.

Mainoties politiskajai situācijai, Luijs XVIII vairākkārt mainīja savas apmešanās vietas, līdz 1798. gada februārī apmetās Jelgavas pilī, ko Krievijas impērijas ķeizars Pāvils I viņam piedāvāja kā pagaidu rezidenci.
