This 4-acre pond was funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under §319(h) of the Clean Water Act through the Kentucky Division of Water to Lexington Fayette Urban County Government.
Cross Keys pond receives run-off from 280 acres of urbanized development which negatively impacts the pond, leaving it muddy and shallow. Water run-off from urbanized areas in the first 24 hours of rain accounts for most of the pollution that enters streams and floods roadways. Cross Key’s retention basin stores water to mitigate flooding and also filters the water before it enters a waterway. Tall grasses and flowers help filter the water that enters the basin, which also reduces the amount of pollution entering waterways. The goal of this project aimed to reduce non-point source pollution entering the waterway.
