The gold mining pre-dates the Roman period but was intensified during the roman presence with the exploration of mines scattered across Pias and Banjas Mountains. In the 18th century, Gondomar is already recognized as one of the most important and proliferous centres of Portuguese Jewellery.
Filigree has a special place among the creations of the local jewellers; handcrafted, it is designed in small scale workshops, family owned throught techniques handed down from generation to generation.
