Geocache Description:

[EN] The green dam stretching almost a kilometer long in Liepaja lake could be poetically called a green mile which is tongue-like structure.

It was artificially created from metallurgical waste and slag to form an extended peninsula. During Soviet times, there was a plan to build a dam to divide the Liepaja lake and protect it from pollution caused by metallurgical wastewater and harmful byproducts from the production process. However, due to historical changes and the strong opposition from environmental activists, the project was never completed. Now it is a unique place for walks, similar to a pier, where you can observe the lake water and the birds that inhabit it, usually swans. In the past, before crossing this path, one had to pass through Horse Island (also known as "Garbage Island"), which used to be a horse cemetery but recently turned into a dumpsite. The surrounding area has already undergone significant changes. Although there are still ongoing improvement works (as of summer 2019), there is already a large parking lot, well-maintained trails, observation platforms, lake shore paths, and picnic areas along the way to the dam. You will also find information boards, benches, trash cans, and a 10-meter high observation tower on the dam itself.

Liepāja lake is a lagoon-type lake formed by the retreat of the Baltic Sea. Many bird species have found both permanent and temporary homes in this area. During spring and fall migration, the lake serves as a resting and feeding place for many bird species, including several rare bird species, such as the great and little bittern. If you hear a regular drumming sound that sounds like someone blowing into a bottle neck while at the lake, you have heard the great bittern, a rare and protected bird species.

The cache itself is a small container with a logbook and a pencil inside, located at the very end of the dam. Please be patient, as there will be many fishermen, ornithologists, and nature enthusiasts here, especially in good weather. Happy geocaching! :)
