Geocache Description:

The Ashland Railroad Station Museum is located in a restored authentic passenger station originally built in 1869 by the Boston, Concord, & Montreal Railroad.  The rail line was acquired by the Concord & Montreal Railroad and the building was remodeled in 1891, with a ticket office added.  It again changed hands in 1895, when the Boston & Maine Railroad took over operations.  The line and station served as a vital link between the cities to the south and the lakes and mountains to the north.  Passenger service ended in 1959, and the building was sold to Mr. Joseph Curley, who was interested in railroad preservation.  His widow gave the station to the Ashland Historical Society in 1980.

The Ashland Historical Society was awarded a federal grant in 1994 to be used towards the restoration and renovation of the building, and five years later after extensive fundraising efforts, the renovated building was dedicated as a museum, having been restored to its 1891 appearance.  According to the Historical Society, the museum is one the best preserved late 19th century railroad stations in New Hampshire, while many of its contemporaries have been torn down or converted to other uses.

The Ashland Historical Society has given us permission to place this cache. The cache is not located inside the station, so it is easily accessible year-round. Bring your own pen, and please replace as found.
