With ‘selective availability’ being switched off on May 2nd 2000, the accuracy of civilian GPS units became transformed and opened up all sorts of new applications. The first ever geocache was set the following day on May 3rd 2000 in Oregon, USA (now marked by a plaque at GCGV0P).
This celebratory event marks the 20th anniversary of the first UK cache being placed near London on June 6th 2000 (the original cache is also marked by a plaque at GC29W7J, which can sometimes be hard to find apparently!).
Where: Lakeside Country Park, Eastleigh, SO50 5PE.
When: Saturday 6th June 2020.
From: 10am to 12 noon.
The event is scheduled for 2 hours but feel free to stay for as long as you feel able. Meet old friends, make new friends, reminisce over favourite caching experiences and make new plans. Other activities may include a Trackable race launch and a ‘puzzle corner’ for help and advice on those pesky puzzle caches, more details to follow.
The location is wheelchair and stroller accessible. Picnic tables, toilets, café, lakes and steam train attraction are all nearby. Dogs (on leads) are welcome. Further information about Lakeside Country Park (including transport options) is here. There is some shelter near to GZ but come prepared for the worst ⛈️!
Attendees will receive a new cache type icon and a profile souvenir to commemorate the 20th anniversary of geocaching.
More details of the event will emerge nearer the time. If you are coming along, please log a ‘Will Attend’ so that: a) I can get a feel for numbers, and b) so that you will receive updates if any announcements are posted.
