Geocache Description:

17 May 2020, 17:30 - 19:30

(That's 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM)

20 Years!

Wow! 20 Years of Geocaching! Let's Celebrate!

May 1, 2000 - An announcement was made that Selective Availability would be lifted.

May 2, 2000 - At approximately midnight, EST Selective Availability lifted and the accuracy of GPS technology was greatly improved.

May 3, 2000 - Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket at N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800, filled with videos, books, software, and a slingshot as well as a logbook and pencil. He called it the First GPS Stash. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav. Within three days two different people read about his stash on the Internet, used their own GPS receivers to find the container and shared their experiences online. The sport of geocaching was born!

So many things have changed with the game and so many have remained the same - since 2000 and even since 2010. Think about changes you've seen over this time or just since you started caching. Maybe we'll discuss.

That is sort of a theme for this particular event.  For instance, 10 years agao, I hosted a Lost & Found Event (as they were called at the time) right here. However, his is my first ever event hosted at Chido's Tex Mex. I hope that at least some of those who were there in 2010 will attend again. Some have moved, some don't seem to play anymore, and we've lost at least one. Of course, I hope to see many new faces, as well.

Why, YOU, of course...whether you have one cache find or a ten-thousand plus cache finds, please feel free to come join us for a small meet and greet. Young or old - bring the kids, parents or friends.

Please be sure to reference the number of people being represented by your Will Attend log. And please try to post your log at least a week ahead of time, so I can give the management as accurate a count as possible and they can be prepared to provide an appropriate level of service.

Sunday, May 17th from 5:30 until 7:30 pm (or so).

Chido's Tex Mex Grill
Laurel, MD

Have dinner, meet geocachers new and old, talk geocaching, trade travel bugs and geocoins and share in the fun of celebrating the 20th anniversary of geocaching!

Why Else:
May is also my personal caching anniversary month and my birthday, so I wanted to be sure to host my Community Celebration Event this month. I started caching on May 30, 2006 and was born on May 13, 19-something-something.

Extra things to keep in mind:

  • If you pick up a Travel Bug or trackable coin at one of the events, make sure you log it out so it doesn't show up in the events list. If a trackable sits as being listed in the event for a couple of months, the cache owner is the one that gets the e-mail from the TB owner(s).
  • Each person attending will be responsible for any costs incurred for food and drinks.
