SideTracked Day 2021 - Woodhead - 14th Anniversary
Tuesday 10 August 2021
15:00 – 17:00 (3 – 5pm)
On the old Woodhead station platforms
Next to the Woodhead Tunnels car park and the Longdendale Trail
2021 not only marks the 14th anniversary of the placing of the first SideTracked geocache, but it is also 40 years since the famous Woodhead railway route was finally closed and the track removed. This pleasing confluence of numbers is the perfect opportunity for us to create our Community Celebration Event and we hope that you will join us between 15:00 and 17:00 for a picnic on the platform of the old Woodhead station.
The nearby permanent SideTracked cache (GC95VQ1) has a lot of interesting information about the Woodhead route and its closure which we will not duplicate for this listing. We’ll pass around a number of historical books about the Woodhead line which you can peruse while you eat, drink and chat about the railway or about geocaching! Drinks and cake will be provided but please bring your own sandwiches and any other food you would like.
At approximately 16:30 there will be a free raffle of some SideTracked geocoins. We've chosen this historic location in the shadow of the railway tunnel portals so that you can combine attending this event with finding a few caches in the area, if you have not already done so before.
As well as the prizes, I will also be bringing along a number of other travel bugs and trackables to swap and discover and invite you to do the same!
We have included parking information as waypoints below for the parking areas near the station. There are many places in the vicinity you can park a car, please do not block any gateways or access routes when doing so. There is also a reference point for the entrance to the main car park from the road, the car park is open but the access road is very bumpy so please drive dead slow and watch out for large pot holes!
We will hopefully see you there on the day and in the meantime, happy caching!
