Geocache Description:

World War I saw the beginnings of the U.S. Army Post Office (APO), which operated independently of the Post Office Department.  The creation of the APO arose out of the War Department's reluctance to share the locations of military units with the Post Office Department, which naturally made the Post Office's task extremely difficult.  In addition, Congress granted Americans serving in the armed forces the right to send their personal correspondence free of charge.  These items were designated by postal markings - in this case, marks - such as "nurse's mail," "officer's mail," and "soldier's mail.
In 1918, military personnel began operating field stations and the first all-military mail service in American history, known as the Military Postal Express Service (MPES), was put into operation. The first army post office, APO 753, opened in May in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, France.
