Buttermilk Butte is the site of a former lookout. Its elavation is 5471 feet. In 1934, the U.S. Forest Service built an L-4 cab. In 1951, it was sold to a private party and moved to a ranch 4 miles up the Twisp River where it remains.
For some time, there has been a cache here but was archived recently. Since we made the drive up for Father's Day, I decided to hide another cache. It is an ammo box about 50 yards south of the road. Including the usual swag, pen, log book and a FTF prize.
The views from the top are fantastic. Oval Peak, Hoodoo Peak and Raven Ridge are just some of what you will see. You won't be disappointed if you make the drive up. Most of the roads are in very good shape. The final stretch is a little rough so an SUV is recommended.
Getting there: If you are heading north on highway 153, shortly before Carton, turn left onto FS43 (Libby Creek Rd.) and follow it to Blackpine Lake. About a mile past the lake turn left onto FS400 and follow it to the top. If you are coming into Twisp south on highway 20, turn right onto the Twisp river road. Follow it up the valley and turn left onto FS43 and continue up until you reach FS400 which will lead you to the top.
Congratulations to omi b. and jazzncatz on the FTF. Hidden, written, published and found in just over 24 hours. Good job team!
