Ransome & Marles made ball bearings and were heavily involved in the war effort in both World Wars. During WWII, the factory took a direct hit on 7 March 1941 with 41 killed and 165 injured. It remains the biggest loss of life on a single day in Newark. The factory was rebuilt in 3 weeks to aid the war effort. A disused and long forgotten underground hospital still exists on the site. It was opened in 2000 for a short period before being sealed up again.
