Einst war Drangstedt der Nabel des Elbe-Weser-Dreiecks und hatte zwei Bahnhöfe. Den "Hauptbahnhof" im Dorfzentrum und diesen hier: Bahnhof Knüppelholz. Der Bahnhof Knüppelholz war die Verbindung des etwas nördlich gelegenen Waldkrankenhauses mit dem Rest der Welt. Die meisten Patient*innen, deren Besucher*innen und die Mitarbeiter*innen des Krankenhauses kamen mit dem Zug hier an. Neugeborene, darunter diverse spätere Landtags- und Bundestagsabgeordnete, traten ihre erste Lebensreise an diesem Bahnsteig an. Autos hatten damals die wenigsten, und die Busverbindung gibt es erst, seitdem der Personenzugverkehr eingestellt wurde. Als die Bremerhavener Krankenhäuser im zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört und nach Drangstedt ausgelagert wurden, herrschte am Bahnhof Knüppelholz bis weit in die 1950er Jahre hinein ein reges Treiben.
In manchen Wintern lag einst so viel Schnee, dass man nur mit Skiern oder Schneeschuhen vom Bahnhof zum Krankenhaus kam. All das lässt sich heute nur schwer vorstellen. Ab und zu zuckelt noch die Museumsbahn hier längs. Aber meistens sagen sich nur noch Hase und Igel gute Nacht.

Drangstedt once had two train stations. The "main station" in the village center and this one here: Knüppelholz station. Knüppelholz station was the connection between the forest hospital, which was located somewhat to the north, and the rest of the world. Most of the patients, their visitors and the hospital staff arrived here by train. Newborns, including various later members of state and federal parliaments began their first life journey on this platform as there were only few cars in those days and the bus service has only been around since passenger trains stopped in the 1960s. When the Bremerhaven hospitals were destroyed in the Second World War and moved to Drangstedt, there was a lot of activity at Knüppelholz station until well into the 1950s.
In some winters there was so much snow that you could only get to the hospital from the train station on skis or snowshoes. All of this is difficult to imagine today.
