Geocache Description:

$1 for *FTF*

A little history of Pequaming. Pequaming is a narrow point of land that juts into Keweenaw Bay and is a mushroom shaped peninsula known as a tombolo, an island connected over time by sandbars to the mainland,  Still partially inhabited, Pequaming is one of the largest ghost towns in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Orignally was home to an Ojibwe tribe settlement and in 1877 Charles Hebard and Edward Thurber purchased a large tract of land on the point for its easy access to timber and protected harbor. The mill operated under Hebard and Thurber until partnership dissolved with Hebard as sole proprietor and renamed his company Hebard and Sons. When, Charles Hebard died in 1904, his sons David and Charles inherited the company and continued the operations. "The Bungalow", which later became Henry Ford's summer home, was constructed in 1913.

In 1922 the Ford Motor Company approached the Hebards to purchase their timber stands only, with the Hebards convincing Ford to purchase the mill and surrounding town as well. Ford purchased the mill, surrounding town for $2,850,000 which included the double band sawmill, lath and shingle mills, 40,000 acres of timber land, 30,000,000 board feet of lumber, 3,000,000 board feet of cut logs, the town land and buildings, the railroad, and towing and water equipment on September 8, 1923. The company closed the mill on October 9, 1942, with the last logs sawed on October 28.
