Geocache Description:

This is a virtual cache, approximately 25 miles east of Fallon, Nv. along Highway 50. To verify your visit, answer the following question: According to the sign at these coordinates, what is the Northern Paiute name for Sand Mountain? Email me the answer, please do not post it in your log. This is a popular area, and even if you've been there a million times, since this is a virtual cache, you'll have to answer the question to claim the find. There's gotta be a bit of a challenge to it!

Sand Mountain is a popular and historic site along Highway 50. A huge sand dune, Sand Mountain attracts nearly 30,000 visitors annually, mostly ATVer's. The Sand Springs station of the Pony Express is nearby. The wind is constantly changing the shape of the mountain. The blowing quartz sand creates a low frequency noise described as a humming, or sometimes booming sound. This is one of only 3 such "singing mountains" in the United States. Of course, it's nearly impossible to hear the "singing" over the noise of the ORVs. Mid-week is the best time, when motorized activity is at it's lowest. Even so, it's really fun to sit and watch the numerous ATVs and sand rails race up the dune. There is some serious horsepower going up the mountain! This is a fun and interesting stop along "America's Loneliest Highway." Apparently BLM is charging a fee to enter the park, but you will NOT need to pay to log this cache.
