Voor paal staan is een Nederlandse uitdrukking. Het betekent dat je een blunder maakt waar je je erg voor schaamt. Deze uitdrukking is niet zomaar de Nederlandse taal binnengeslopen en heeft te maken met de schandpaal of geselpaal. De schandpaal werd vooral in de Middeleeuwen op verschillende plekken in Europa gebruikt om misdadigers te onteren door ze te kijk te zetten voor omstanders. Bij oude schandpalen zat de veroordeelde met zijn armen en hoofd vast. Dat was vooral vervelend wanneer toeschouwers de veroordeelde met rot fruit begon te bekogelen. Deze manier van straf is nog tot ver in de 18e eeuw gebruikt en pas halverwege de 19e eeuw officieel afgeschaft als strafmethode. Maar de uitdrukking komt nog steeds voor in onze taal.
