The Makawao Union Church was dedicated in 1917. It is built of reinforced concrete with native basalt lava rock veneer. The roof is covered with slate from Vermont. Four stained glass windows and the bell were reused from the old building. A Seth Thomas clock has three faces on the Norman style tower. The main entry is through oak doors in the tower. The original church goes as far back as 1865 when Henry Baldwin and his family were part of the congregation. Henry Perrine Baldwin (August 29, 1842 – July 8, 1911) was a businessman and politician on Maui. He supervised the construction of the East Maui Irrigation System and co-founded Alexander & Baldwin, one of the "Big Five" corporations that dominated the economy of the Territory of Hawaii. Henry lost his arm in a sugarcane factory accident and served as a one armed organist for the congregation for over 40 years. Enjoy the cache and please treat the church site with respect and practice Aloha.
