Geocache Description:

Every morning I drive the Plank Road to work which inspired this cache.

The original idea for Plank Roads came from Russia to Canada in the 1830’s and became, for a short time, a popular method of road construction spreading, in the 1840’s, to the US. It is recorded that in 1845 the cost of a Plank Road was 450 pounds a mile (about $900), they allowed travel at 7 to 8 mph in summer, needed repairing in 5 years and renewal in 10. Maintenance was the downfall of the Plank Road. Some disappeared, others are now just trails, many were converted to gravel and later paved, but the name stuck, and there are still many “Plank Roads”.

This cache challenges you to find a Plank Road and:

· Post a picture of a marker identifying it as having once been a Plank Road
· List the location, as well as the coordinates
· Include any information you can find on its history
· A Plank Road may only be logged once
· Only one log per cacher

The pictures below show the plaque giving the history of my Plank Road (you can find it at N 42º 47.045’ W 82º 07.797’) and two views of the present day road

As of April 3, 2004, 61 Plank Roads (and some Planked bridges), some still with original planks have been found in 8 countries, 13 states and 4 provinces. Here's a summary:
