Geocache Description:

Once an important fishing post Hellissandur recently experienced growth in tourism. The maritime museum has examples of the turf roof houses once common across Iceland, as well as marine engines and Iceland's oldest rowing boat (1826). Hellissandur is one of the first and oldest fishing villages in Iceland and is traced back to the 16th century. Population: Around 350 inhabitants (April 2021).

Hellissandur became the so called "capital of street art of Iceland". Worth to drive around town and have a closer look at all the artwork.

The Geocache:

The box is hidden on privat ground. Please watch out for muggels. There has been a Restaurant before. Unfortunately the owners needed to close :-(. But they now run the "ART Gallery" next to the wall paintings. Worth to have a closer look. Everything handmade with passion and love. Unique souvenirs!!! Say hi from "Mr. Lava Lava", they are good friends of mine.

Sidenote:

One of the points of interest near Hellissandur is Snæfellsjökull glacier, made famous by Jules Verne in his Journey to the Center of the Earth. Just outside the village, there is the northern entrance to the Snæfellsjökull National Park, which surrounds the western and southern sides of the glacier. Nearby is the 412 metre tall Gufuskálar radio mast, the tallest structure in Western Europe, located 2 kilometres westward.
