Na sua viagem de regresso à Europa, após ter descoberto a América (que ele pensava ser a Índia), Cristóvão Colombo enfrentou uma tempestade tão dura que não teve dúvidas: redigiu uma mensagem, relatando a descoberta, e a enfiou dentro de uma garrafa, na esperança de que ela atingisse a Europa, caso ninguém sobrevivesse para contar a boa nova.
A garrafa de Colombo jamais foi encontrada.
Mas o mesmo não se pode dizer de outras mensagens do gênero, enviadas por oficiais da Marinha Inglesa, nas quais relatavam posições de navios inimigos no Século 16, para a Rainha Elizabeth que, por isso mesmo, punia com pena de morte quem abrisse uma dessas garrafas antes de entregá-las à Corte.
Desde aquela época, despachar mensagens pelo mar dentro de garrafas, uma das mais antigas formas de comunicação da História, tornou-se algo bem mais comum e frequente do que os filmes de náufragos sugerem. Até porque, embora sujeita as intempéries, uma garrafa bem lacrada é um dos objetos mais marinheiros já inventados pelo homem.
Ondas e tempestades são capazes de afundar grandes navios, mas não conseguem tirar da superfície uma simples garrafinha com um pouco de ar dentro.
E isso continua até hoje.
