Geocache Description:

Marqab castle

Qal'at al-Marqab is one of the largest and most important medieval castles of the Levant. As it overlooks the mediterranean coast, it was a very strategic location. The seven hectares big areal has a complex history from the time of its establishment by Arabs, through Byzantine, Crusader, Mamluk and Ottoman periods. The first castle is said to have been built by the local inhabitants of the area, before it fell into the hands of Byzantine and, shortly afterwards, Crusaders. Later, it also served as a military depot and prison. The last time that this castle was in military use was in 1920, when the forces of Sheikh Saleh Al Ali used it as a base against the French.

The Cache is hidden inside a small hole in the wall and covered by a stone. Use the spoiler pictures for more help, as it might be very difficult to find it without them.
