Voici devant vous la carrière à ciel ouvert de la cimenterie de Villiers-au-Bouin, commune d’Indre et Loire. Cette cimenterie a été construite en 1966 par Poliet et Chausson, et appartient au groupe Calcia. Elle emploie 78 personnes et produit jusqu’à 380.000 tonnes de ciment chaque année.
Here is in front of you the open-air quarry of the Villiers-au-Bouin cement plant, commune of Indre et Loire. This cement factory was built in 1966 by Poliet and Chausson, and belongs to the Calcia group. It employs 78 people and produces up to 380,000 tonnes of cement each year.
Comment est fabriqué le ciment ?
- Extraction de calcaire et d’argile dans le milieu naturel.
- Concassage : réduction des blocs à une taille maximale de 80 mm maximum, et acheminement vers le hall de pré homogénéisation.
- Pré homogénéisation : mélange des calcaires et des argiles en couches superposées.
- Broyage pré cuisson en particules très fines, type « farine ».
- Cuisson dans un four rotatif ou la température de la matière avoisine les 1450°C.
A plus de 500°C, les argiles se décomposent, à plus de 950°C, les calcaires se décomposent.
A la sortie, les matières nommée « clinker » se refroidissent à l’air libre.
- Broyage post cuisson avec ajouts de matières afin de créer des ciments qui serviront à des travaux divers (qualité de dureté, de durabilité, de résistance, d’esthétique…)
- Stockage et expédition.
How is cement made?
1. Extraction of limestone and clay from the natural environment.
2. Crushing: reduction of the blocks to a maximum size of 80 mm maximum, and transport to the pre-homogenization hall.
3. Pre-homogenization: mixture of limestone and clay in superimposed layers.
4. Pre-cooking grinding into very fine particles, “flour” type.
5. Firing in a rotary kiln where the temperature of the material is around 1450°C.
At more than 500°C, the clays decompose, at more than 950°C, the limestones decompose.
At the exit, the materials called "clinker" cool in the open air.
6. Post-curing grinding with addition of materials to create cements that will be used for various works (quality of hardness, durability, resistance, aesthetics, etc.)

Quelle différence entre chaux et ciment ?
La chaux est la calcination du calcaire (d’anciens fours à chaux sont toujours visibles dans la région), formule chimique CaO, oxyde de calcium. La chaux permet l’échange gazeux à l’intérieur des murs, qui peuvent « respirer ».
Le ciment a un ajout de gypse (espèce minérale composée de sulfite déshydraté CaSO4-2H2O, auquel est mélangé de l’alumine ou de la silice.)
What is the difference between lime and cement?
Lime is the calcination of limestone (old lime kilns are still visible in the area), chemical formula CaO, calcium oxide. Lime allows gaseous exchange inside the walls, which can “breathe”.
The cement has an addition of gypsum (mineral species composed of dehydrated sulphite CaSO4-2H2O, to which is mixed alumina or silica.)
Pourquoi la cimenterie s’est implantée ici ?
Le gisement très important de calcaires est un reste de dépôts de sédiments datant de l’éocène, au début du cénozoïque, il y a -65 à -45 Ma. (Source : Géo-portail). Seuls les calcaires et les argiles seront extraits pour être acheminés vers la cimenterie, les autres blocs de roches présents dans la carrière seront laissés de côté.
Why did the cement plant set up here?
The very important limestone deposit is a remnant of sediment deposits dating from the Eocene, at the beginning of the Cenozoic, -65 to -45 Ma ago. (Source: Geo-portal). Only limestone and clay will be extracted to be transported to the cement plant, the other blocks of rock present in the quarry will be left aside.
