O Segredo da Fabrica da Polvora
A Fábrica da Pólvora fica no vale de Barcarena, local abundante de água, e constituiu um polo aglutinador da população da freguesia e zonas circundantes.
As primeiras referências à ocupação deste vale indicam a instalação de umas Ferrarias, em 1487, para o fabrico de armas. Só no século XVII, cerca de 1618-19, terá funcionado a primeira oficina para o fabrico da pólvora negra. As ferrarias acabariam por encerrar no final do século XVII. A oficina de pólvora foi-se adaptando e ajustando aos vários tipos de pólvoras, às novas maquinarias e às diversas fontes de energia, até ao seu encerramento em 1988.
Os trilhos ao longo da mata de eucaliptos sao optimos para um passeio de manhã ou ao final da tarde, a terminar com um cafe nos jardins da fabrica da polvora, alguns metros mais abaixo.
The Secret of the Gunpowder Factory
The Gunpowder Factory (Fábrica da Pólvora) is located in the valley of Barcarena, a place with plenty of water, and was a hub that brought together the population of the parish and surrounding areas.
The first references to the occupation of this valley indicate the installation of some "Ferrarias" in 1487 for the manufacture of weapons. Only in the 17th century, around 1618-19, the first workshop for the production of black powder was established. The smithies would eventually close by the end of the 17th century. The gunpowder workshop gradually adapted and adjusted to the various types of gunpowder, the new machinery and the various energy sources, until it closed in 1988.
The trails along the eucalyptus forest are great for a morning or late afternoon stroll, ending with a coffee in the gardens of the gunpowder factory a few meters down.
