Frankopanski kaštel u Krku



Frankopani su bili hrvatska plemićka obitelj, čiji su članovi bili jedni od većih veleposjednika i visokih časnika Kraljevine Hrvatske u uniji s Ugarskom. Frankopani, uz Zrinske, spadaju među najznačajnije i najpoznatije hrvatske velikaške rodove koji su od 11. do 17. stoljeća, vrlo usko bili povezani s poviješću, prošlošću i sudbinom hrvatskoga naroda i Hrvatske. Stoljećima su članovi tih velikaških rodova bili nositelji i branitelji Hrvatske od nadmoćnijega osmanlijskoga osvajača, ali i odlučni protivnici sve opasnijega habsburškoga carskog apsolutizma. Ove su obitelji također posjedovale mnoge dvorce na području Gorskog kotara i Kvarnera, a ovaj vas geocache vodi do jednog od tih dvoraca.

Kaštel u Krku Frankopani su gradili stoljećima u nizu svojih naraštaja, od 12. do 15., a današnji oblik dobio je tijekom kasnoga srednjeg vijeka. Spretno je uklopljen u rimske gradske zidine, a sastoji se od četiri kule, zidina i prostranoga atrija s vodospremom u kojem su se sklanjali vojnici i građani u vrijeme opasnosti. Kaštel je kasnije pripao Mlečanima, čemu svjedoče ploče s likom lava svetoga Marka.

The House of Frankopan was a Croatian noble family, whose members were among the great landowner magnates and high officers of the Kingdom of Croatia in union with Hungary. The Frankopans, along with the Zrinskis, are among the most important and most famous Croatian noble families who, from the 11th to the 17th century, were very closely connected with the history, past and destiny of the Croatian people and Croatia. For centuries, members of these noble clans were the bearers and defenders of Croatia against the Ottomans, but also resolute opponents of the increasingly dangerous Habsburg imperial absolutism. These families also owned many castles in the areas of Gorski kotar and Kvarner, and this geocache takes you to one of those castles.

The Frankopans built the castle of Krk over the centuries through their generations, from the 12th to the 15th century, and it gained its present shape during the Late Middle Ages. It is skilfully incorporated within the Roman town ramparts, and consists of four towers, walls and a spacious atrium with a cistern in which soldiers and citizens would hide in times of danger. The castle later fell into the hands of the Venetians, as evidenced by plaques containing the lion of Saint Mark.
