Due to trail maintenance with tree cutting I needed to move this cache. It is still in the same area but about 120 feet opposite the Killing Rock.
This Cache is located on The Red Fox Trail between Pound VA and the Kentucky state line on old Rt US23. After leaving Pound on Rt 23 North bound turn left on Rt 667. If coming from Kentucky turn right on Rt 667. Parking coordinates are N 37 08.532, W 082 37.289. After parking your vehicle walk out the gravel road to the left, to the sign that identifies the Red Fox Trail. The Cache is located about .36 of a mile, as the crow flies, from the parking area and it is all up hill. Actually it is just above the Curmudgeon's Station Cache. There is a sign at the location and the Cache is about 40 feet off the trail at The Killing Rock.
If you don't want to water your horse at the watering trough or you don't want to wade through the mud hole you can park at the top of the mountain at the Sunoco Station at these coordinates N 37 09.216 W 082 37.939. Climb the stone steps to the right of the gas station, walk through the field to the Pine Mountain Trail down to where the Red Fox Trail intersects with the Pine Mountain Trail. Turn left onto the Red Fox Trail and travel down the trail just a short distance to the Killing Rock.
At one time the Red Fox Trail was the main road between Virginia & Kentucky. On May 14, 1892 seven people left Elkhorn Kentucky. Three rode in a wagon, three people followed the wagon and one person was leading the way. They were traveling on the old Fincastle Trail and had just left Pound Gap when a barrage of gunfire rang out from the right side of the road from behind a large rock now known as the Killing Rock. After the shooting was over, five people and two horses lay dead on the trail.
This cache was inactive for a while because someone was digging in the immediate area looking for Indian artifacts. I believe they are through digging so I have put a new cache in the same location. I apologize to the cachers who searched for this cache and left empty-handed. Sorry!!!
