Geocache Description:

Find an HO, N, G or O scale train in a public place.

Model railroading has been popular for a great many years, and today some of the first model trains are very valuable. There are a number of different size. N is the smallest, then HO which is the most common, then S, O & finally G, which is 6 times as large as HO.

If you've seen model trains then you know that the people who play with them can be as passionate as they can be artistic. I visited a "museum" (there's no other word for it, which has thousands of model trains, and encompasses a 3 story building, a testament to the inventiveness, artistry, and the sheer scope that model railroading can take on.

What I find interesting is when you encounter them in unusual settings, emphasis on the words unusual settings. That's what we're looking for here, if you want to log a find. Here are the rules for this locationless cache:

  • Your GPS & the railroad must be in the shot. no exceptions.
  • logs without pictures will be deleted. For those who must get their film developed you may log your find as a note, then when your pictures are uplaoded, change it to a find.
  • The location must not be directly related to modeling or railroading. Let me make this part clear: displays in commercial locations or museums are absolutely ok as long as the location has no specific tie to modeling or railroading. So a model train museum is out, a science museum is fine. We are looking for model railroads in unusual places, and one would expect to find them in a model train museum.
  • the display must be permanent or at least expected to be permanent. So a science museum which displays a model train as lesson in physics is fine. One that is on display from Sep 1-Dec 31 is not.
  • the model railroad must be one of the sizes stated. Anything big enough to ride on is not valid.
  • Please tell us the location, the size of the train and any info on the model, how long it took to build, why they built it, etc.
  • One log per individual, one individual per location.

This particular model railroad is I believe to be S scale, and runs around the cash register at the Fireplace, a local restaurant.

Note that the original cache description & requirements were not as clear on what I wanted as they are now. I became much more detailed and specific after the 1st 2 logs were placed, as they aren't really what I wanted. However, since I wasn't clear I decided not to deelte them as they thought they were following directions. They are essentially grandfathered. New logs like that wouldn't cut the mustard.
