Geocaching is all about discovering amazing places! That's why I decided to set my virtual at one of the best volcanoes I've ever visited - Nisyros!
I hope this virtual will encourage many other Geocachers to visit Nisyros and experience it too!
There are regular daily boats to Nisyros from Kos. But you can also visit Nisyros from many of the other Greek Islands. We stayed on Rhodes recently and took a catamaran from Rhodes Town Harbour. It's quite a journey, but well worth it!

The volcanic island of Nisyros lies a few miles south of Kos. It attracts thousands of visitors every year, who are keen to visit its active caldera. It has been described as "a unique geological attraction, not found anywhere else in Greece!”
Once an underwater volcano, Nisyros rose to become a shield volcano and then evolved into a complex cone with many eruptive vents. It eventually collapsed after two violent caldera-forming eruptions and gave birth to the complex hydrothermal field we see today.
The volcanoe is the youngest in Greece. The last eruptions of the volcano occurred in 1442, 1871, 1873 and 1888.
The 1871 and 1873 eruptions were small ash eruptions. During the eruption of 1873, a 6 to 7 metre crater was formed which threw ash and mud into the air.
The most recent eruption was a steam eruption in 1888, which saw a new cylindrical aqueduct formed, which measured about 25 meters in diameter.
There was also a strong seismic crisis at Nisyros between 1996-1998. This led to an international team of scientists initiating ongoing monitoring of the volcanic unrest. Earthquakes frequently occur on the island.
Stefanos is the largest hydrothermal crater of the Nisyros active hydrothermal field and one of the largest of its kind in the world. It measures about 260x350m and has a maximum depth of 27m. And it is the location of this Virtual Geocache.
Stefanos is one of only a handful of craters in the world where you can actually stand in it. But do wear decent shoes as the ground can get very warm!
If you are staying on Nisyros Island, or have time after seeing the Stefanos Crater, you might like to visit the Volcanological Museum at Nikia and the permanent Volcanological Observatory at Emporios. Both are a great opportunity to learn more about volcanic activity on Nisyros and the surrounding Greek Islands.
GZ for this cache will take you to the floor of the Nisyros Volcanoe crater! From here you can get amazing views of the bright yellow and white crater walls, and smell the sulphur!

Entrance fee:
There is a small entrance fee to enter the volcanoe crater and the area surrounding it - it was about 5 Euros when I visited in 2024.
Facilities:
There is also a cafe and toilets at the site.
The higher difficulty and terrain rating reflect the need to go into the crater, to get a photograph, to log this geocache. It can get very warm underfoot in the crater and it does smell strongly of sulphur. Please take care and only attempt it if you are happy to do so.

Το ηφαιστειακό νησί Νισύρος βρίσκεται λίγα μίλια νότια της Κω. Προσελκύει χιλιάδες επισκέπτες κάθε χρόνο, οι οποίοι είναι πρόθυμοι να επισκεφθούν την ενεργό καλντέρα της. Περιγράφεται ως "μοναδικό γεωλογικό αξιοθέατο, που δεν βρέθηκε πουθενά αλλού στην Ελλάδα!"
Κάποτε ένα υποβρύχιο ηφαίστειο, ο Νισύρος εξελίχθηκε σε ένα ασπίδα ηφαιστείου και στη συνέχεια εξελίσσεται σε ένα πολύπλοκο κώνο με πολλές εκρήξεις. Τελικά κατέρρευσε μετά από δύο βίαιες εκρήξεις που σχηματίζουν καλντέρες και έδωσε τη γέννηση του πολύπλοκου υδροθερμικού πεδίου που βλέπουμε σήμερα.
Το ηφαίστειο είναι το νεότερο στην Ελλάδα. Οι τελευταίες εκρήξεις του ηφαιστείου έγιναν το 1442, 1871, 1873 και 1888.
Οι εκρήξεις του 1871 και του 1873 ήταν μικρές. Κατά τη διάρκεια της έκρηξης του 1873, σχηματίστηκε ένας κρατήρας 6 έως 7 μέτρων ο οποίος έριξε στάχτη και λάσπη στον αέρα.
Η πιο πρόσφατη έκρηξη ήταν μια έκλειψη ατμού το 1888, η οποία είδε ένα νέο κυλινδρικό υδραγωγείο σχηματισμένο, το οποίο μετρήθηκε περίπου 25 μέτρα σε διάμετρο.
Υπήρξε επίσης μια ισχυρή σεισμική κρίση στη Νισύρο μεταξύ 1996-1998. Αυτό οδήγησε μια διεθνή ομάδα επιστημόνων να ξεκινήσει τη συνεχή παρακολούθηση της ηφαιστειακής αναταραχής. Σεισμοί συμβαίνουν συχνά στο νησί.

Die vulkanische Insel Nisyros liegt wenige Meilen südlich von Kos. Es zieht jedes Jahr Tausende von Besuchern an, die ihre aktive Kaldera besuchen wollen. Es wurde als "eine einzigartige geologische Attraktion beschrieben, die nirgendwo sonst in Griechenland gefunden wird!"
Als Unterwasser-Vulkan wuchs Nisyros zu einem Schutzvulkan auf und entwickelte sich dann zu einem komplexen Kegel mit vielen eruptiven Ventilen. Es kollabierte schließlich nach zwei gewaltsamen Caldera-bildenden Eruptionen und brachte das komplexe hydrothermische Feld hervor, das wir heute sehen.
Der Vulkan ist der jüngste in Griechenland. Die letzten Vulkanausbrüche ereigneten sich 1442, 1871, 1873 und 1888.
Die Eruptionen von 1871 und 1873 waren kleine Ascheeruptionen. Während des Ausbruchs 1873 wurde ein 6 bis 7 Meter hoher Krater gebildet, der Asche und Schlamm in die Luft geworfen hat.
Der jüngste Ausbruch war ein Dampfbruch im Jahr 1888, bei dem ein neuer zylindrischer Aquädukt gebildet wurde, der etwa 25 Meter Durchmesser hatte.
