Geocache Description:

Ye Ole Survey Monument (YOSM) is a captivating series of caches that pays homage to the remarkable legacy of OutForTheHunt's YSM series (GC45CC).

There are around 6500 Trig Points across the UK. They were placed after 1935 to allow the Ordnance Survey to accurately compile a detailed map of the country. Most of them including this one, are above sea level, although there is one in Cambridgeshire which is 1 metre below sea level. At least two other Trig Points could be seen from any of the Trig Points when they were built, although this may no longer be the case due to vegetation growth. Sadly I have been unable to work out the ones originally visible from here.

Most of the UK Trig Points are made of concrete and have a square base, tapering towards the top which is generally 4 feet high.

YOSM caches are strategically positioned at or near Trig Points. These triangulation stations have played a pivotal role as surveying landmarks, contributing to the mapping of expansive territories. Some of these points, bearing historical significance, might now be situated on private land or have vanished with time. As a result, the caches are artfully placed in close proximity, reverently acknowledging the historical importance of these survey monuments.

More information, bookmarks and statistics can be found at the YOSM Website.

If anybody would like to expand the Ye Ole Survey Monuments Series, please do. I would ask that you request a number for your cache first at https://yosm.org.uk so we can keep track of the numbers and names to avoid duplication.

This Cache

Horseshoe Hill Trigpoint

If you park near the gate at N54 47.767 W002 01.442 and follow the track up the hill it will be about half a kilometre until you arrive at the Trig Point. You will have left the track and covered some boggy ground, and have gained about 20 metres in elevation.

To log the cache, both of the following tasks should be completed.

Task 1.

At the trig point take a photo which includes the trig point and the nearby wireless antenna. This photo should also include either you (but if you are camera shy at least a part of you), or a piece of your equipment, or something which includes your caching name, and include that photo in your log.

Task 2

At the second location you will see a gate to the compound where there is a sign which says Caution Radio transmitters operating. On that sign there is an 08000 phone number.  To log the Virtual cache contact me through the messaging centre with the appropriate phone number.

Any other photos are welcome, as long as they do not show the answer to task 2.

To be fair to other cachers, any logs where the two tasks have not been completed will be deleted. Prior to deleting those logs I will contact the cacher so they have a chance to complete the tasks.
