Com 130 metros de extensão, a Ponte Velha do Faial foi, durante muito tempo, a maior ponte da ilha da Madeira. Nos dias de hoje, aquilo que resta da sua estrutura imponente é um importante marco histórico da região.
Construída no início do século XX, esta ponte foi projetada com o intuito de ligar as duas margens da freguesia do Faial, separadas pela Ribeira do Faial. A sua inauguração foi realizada no ano de 1904, tendo-se tornado, na altura, a mais extensa da ilha. Mais tarde, acabaria por ficar conhecida como a “Ponte das Sete Bocas”, em resultado dos sete arcos que a constituíam.
Porém, 80 anos depois da sua abertura, em 1984, esta ponte acabou por ser destruída por um forte temporal que assolou a costa norte madeirense. A estrutura não resistiu à fúria das águas da ribeira, ditando assim o desmoronamento de quatro dos seus sete arcos.
Depois deste episódio, a possibilidade de reconstruir a Ponte Velha do Faial acabou por ser descartada. A escassos metros do local foi, então, erigida a Ponte Primeiro de Julho, aberta ao público em 1986. Não obstante, os três arcos restantes da antiga ponte permanecem conservados como um importante marco histórico do concelho.

At 130 meters long, the Ponte Velha do Faial was, for a long time, the longest bridge on the island of Madeira. Today, what remains of its imposing structure is an important historical landmark in the region.
Built at the beginning of the 20th century, this bridge was designed with the aim of connecting the two banks of the parish of Faial, separated by Ribeira do Faial. Its inauguration took place in 1904, becoming, at the time, the largest on the island. Later, it would end up becoming known as the “Bridge of the Seven Mouths”, as a result of the seven arches that made it up.
However, 80 years after its opening, in 1984, this bridge ended up being destroyed by a strong storm that hit the north coast of Madeira. The structure could not resist the fury of the river's waters, causing the collapse of four of its seven arches.
After this episode, the possibility of rebuilding the Old Faial Bridge ended up being discarded. A few meters from the site, the Primeiro de Julho Bridge was built, opened to the public in 1986. However, the three remaining arches of the old bridge remain preserved as an important historical landmark in the municipality.
