The portion of Route 9 in Maine between Brewer and Calais is commonly referred to as The Airline. This is because it is a shorter route than Route 1, known as The Shoreline. This nickname has been around since the 1850s and refers to the straight line a bird might travel, or a shortcut. We have traveled this route many times on our way to and from the maritime provinces in Canada.
The cars and trucks just fly along the road, so be sure to pull off completely before exiting your vehicle. Stay safe and bring a writing utensil!
