Want to feel like a smartie? Learn these cool facts!
- Kodiak is the second largest island in the USA (smaller than Hawaii's big island, but bigger than Puerto Rico!) It's also the 80th largest island in the world!
- Like big bears? Kodiak has some of the largest bears in the world - the Kodiak Brown Bear. They're almost the size of a polar bear and found exclusively in Kodiak. The chances of seeing one is pretty good - roughly 3,500 bears live on the island. I like viewing them at the Buskin River, personally.
- For over 7,000 years Kodiak has had residents enjoying it's beautiful shores and plentiful seafood. The Aluqiiq are the indiginous people and the local high school had a course to learn the language!
- The largest US Coast Guard base in the country is here! Almost 20% of the population here is associated with the military.
- You won't see a moose, but you could see a deer! Sitka black-tailed deer are in abundance here, with the highest density of Sitka black-tailed deer in the world.
- You'll have to get there by plane or boat, but plains bison can be found in the community of Old Harbor on the southside of the Island!
- In the late 1700's, Russian fur hunters and traders established a commercial port in Kodiak. Did you know it was the first capital of Russian America?
- On top of big bears, Kodiak has small creatures too! Kodiak is the natural habitat for the Little Brown Bat, the smallest mammal in Alaska!
Whether you're here for a day or have lived here for a while, there's always something new to discover in Kodiak!
