Geocache Description:

The Rhine River ferry in this area was built in 1998 at the Neue Germersheimer Schiffswerft shipyard as construction number 868.

This self-propelled vessel with a capacity of 30 passenger cars and 170 passengers has been in operation since then on the route between the French municipality of Rhinau and the German municipality of Kappel-Grafenhausen.

Historical records show that various forms of transport across the Rhine River in this area existed in the past. For example, when the town of Rhinau was part of the German Empire, there was a bridge called the "Schiffbrücke", which was opened on May 25, 1873. This bridge was in service until 1921, when it was closed.

The current ferry is therefore not the first means of transport at this location, but represents a modern continuation of a long history of cross-border transport in this area.

This ferry is one of the busiest connections between France and Germany and is operated by the French authorities.

Hours of Operation: The ferry operates daily, with departures approximately every 15 minutes. For up-to-date schedules, we recommend checking the official website or contacting the automated information line at +33 368338081.

Fees: The service is free all year round.

A pretty simple cache especially for those who know where to look for information, so good luck.

The information about the cache:

Close to the initial coordinates, you will find a traffic sign with a speed limit. In the direction to the river. This number = A.

Next, you will need to know the name of the ferry ship, its length, and its width in meters.

How many letters are in the ship's name? That equals B.

How many meters long is the ship? That equals C.

How many meters wide is the ship? That equals D.

C-D-B = E, E÷2 = azimuth. A+D+B = F, Fx30 = distance in meters from initial coordinates.

The cache is located in France, so you'll probably have to take a ferry.

The box is located above shallow water you will need rubber boots or wellies.

The cache is a letterbox Hybrid. So there is a stamp in the box, please do not take it away.

Be careful not to spill the contents into the water when opening the box.

Terrain 5 is only due to the necessity of using a boat and crossing the state border across the Rhine River, otherwise the terrain is about 3.

The journey to the box takes 1.5 - 2km.

Happy caching!
