A costa sudoeste do Faial situa-se numa área que foi e é formada pela parte ocidental da fileira de vulcões que formou o Faial.
Começando pelo vulcão central (Caldeira), passando pelo Caboço da Trinta, Cabeço do Fogo, Cabeço Verde, Cabeço do Canto, até ao último vulcão que acrescentou uma parte extra ao Faial em 1959, o Vulcão dos Capelinhos. A erupção do Cabeço do Fogo, em particular (por volta de 1671), foi muito violenta e acompanhada por fortes terramotos. Grandes áreas do Capelo, Norte Pequeno e Praia do Norte foram destruídas.
A erupção do Vulcão dos Capelinhos, em 1959, espalhou enormes quantidades de cinzas vulcânicas sobre a zona, destruindo toda a vegetação e casas, e levando muitos habitantes do Faial a emigrar para a América.
Esta história de origem é ainda claramente visível nesta área. A Estrada Varadouro – Comprido, a estrada que liga o antigo porto baleeiro do Porto do Comprido à vila do Varadouro, é um caminho de terra batida que faz parte de um percurso pedestre por esta zona do Faial e que permite o fácil acesso à costa em vários locais com belas vistas. Devido à natureza relativamente intocada da área, ao tipo de lava que aqui se encontra e às diferentes camadas claramente distinguíveis na costa, é fácil perceber como a área se formou. Esta cache está localizada num desses belos miradouros.

The south-western coast of Faial is located in an area that was and is formed by the western part of the row of volcanoes that formed Faial.
Starting with the central volcano (Caldeira) via Cabeço das Trinta, Cabeço do Fogo, Cabeço Verde, Cabeço do Canto to the last volcano that added an extra piece to Faial in 1959, the Vulcão dos Capelinhos. The eruption of the Cabeço do Fogo in particular (around 1671) was very violent and was accompanied by strong earthquakes. Large parts of Capelo, Norte Pequeno and Praia do Norte were destroyed.

This history of origin is still clearly visible in this area. The Estrada Varadouro – Comprido, the road that connects the old whaling port of Porto do Comprido with the village of Varadouro is a dirt road that is part of a walk through this part of Faial and gives easy access to the coast at a number of locations with beautiful views and due to the relative untouched nature of the area, the type of lava that is found here and the different layers that are clearly distinguishable on the coast, it is clear to see how the area was formed. This cache is located at one of these beautiful viewpoints.
