About Gretna Green Railway Station

Originally opened on 23rd September 1848. a new route opened up when the village got it's own railway station, as Gretna station by the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway. In April 1852 it was renamed Gretna Green railway station, reflecting on the area's fame for weddings. The local 'priests' would wait for the couples, but were not allowed on the platform by the stationmaster Mr Ward. They stood in a row behind the railings, all dressed in black, trying to attract custom. The original station closed in December 1965. The line was reduced to a single track in 1973 and the signal box was closed and the westbound line was lifted.
In 1993 a new station with a single platform on a single line was built just to the west of the original platform. In 2008 the down line was redoubled and a fully accessible bridge was installed to the new westbound platform making it a two platform unstaffed station on the Glasgow South Western Line, operated by ScotRail and runs between Carlisle and Glasgow Central.
