Geocache Description:

This is the place where Steve Prefontaine died.

Steve Prefontaine is still the greatest distance runner America has known. His records are unmatched (the number of American records he held at one time), and his tragic death in 1975 cut short a career that was only beginning. Come and pay respects to this local legend. For more information you can visit www.stevepre.com, read the book "Pre", or watch one of the movies that was made about his life. Growing up in Coos Bay, I read his book when I was in third grade. His career motivated me to be the best runner I could be. So, I felt that this was an important virtual cache to have posted, so others can come to this special spot. There is no parking at the cache site, so you'll have to walk in from the nearest place you can find. PLEASE: MAKE A CAREFUL NOTE: To log this cache, please email me a description of the small statue that is mounted on this rock wall, and what type of material it appears to be made out of. The statue is on the rock wall, not part of the plaque. Also, make a note of the date he died.
