A levada no Faial é um canal de betão construído a meio da década de 1960 para proporcionar uma forma sustentável de gerar eletricidade. A água recolhida neste canal flui para uma bacia e, a partir daí, passa por um tubo até uma pequena central elétrica em Varadouro e, a seguir, desagua no oceano. O caminho que desce e passa pela gruta é o caminho que começa a seguir o tubo (subterrâneo) e depois curva através do que outrora foi uma bela floresta de criptomeria, da qual grande parte foi destruída pelo furacão "Lorenzo" em 2019 e, recentemente, pelo furacão "Helena" em 2025.
A própria gruta é um pequeno túnel de lava.

The levada on Faial is a concrete channel built halfway the 1960’s to provide for a sustainable way of generating electricity. The water collected in this channel flows into a basin and from there goes through a pipeline to a small powerplant in Varadouro and after that runs into the ocean.
The path that runs down and passes the cave is the path that starts following the (underground) pipeline and than bends of through what once was a beautiful cryptomeria forest of which big parts have been destroyed by hurricane “Lorenzo” in 2019 and lately by hurricane “Helena” in 2025.
The cave itself is a small lavatunnel.
