Lawrence Washington, a prosperous wool merchant, built Sulgrave Manor in 1560. His great grandson, also Lawrence, supported the Royalists during the English Civil War 1642-51. However, on defeat the Washingtons had to surrenderer the lands they owned. This have said motivated his son, John, to seek better prospects in America. John sailed in 1657 and was ship wrecked off the coast of the Colony of Virginia. John married and had a son also called Lawrence, he became a wealthy tobacco plantation owner. John married and had a son called Augustine Washington in 1694. Augustine married Mary Ball and had 6 children, one being George Washington in 1732. George became the first President of the new republic in 1789. Royalist to republican in four generations...the rest is history.Â
