Geocache Description:

Orville and Wilbur Wright were the first people to build and fly a heavier-than-air powered aircraft.  While their first successful  powered and controlled airplane flight actually took place in North Carolina, these Dayton, Ohio natives did all of their research, building, and test flights in and around Dayton - which is why Ohio is known as the "Birthplace of Aviation."  The Wright Brothers had a significant impact on our entire area in Dayton, with many areas and businesses named in their honor - Wright State University and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, among others.

Orville originally had an interest in printing, and started a small, home-based printing business in 1886.  Wilbur eventually joined him in this collaboration, in which they published flyers, pamphlets, and several short-lived newspapers. Orvillle and Wilbur designed and built a larger professional printing press, which led to bigger jobs, wider distribution, and then they sold their business to open a bicycle company.  It was through this experience of desiging, building, and selling custom bicycles that led them to experiment with mechanical flight. There are many important sites relevant to human flight/the Wright Brothers around the Dayton area, such as the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, Wright Seaplane Base, Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, Carillon Park, National Museum of the US Air Force, and many more.  I encourage you to visit them all!

Given the signficant contribution of the Wright Brothers, they could have had a monument built for them in Washington DC, or have been laid to rest in a place of honor in such a place as Arlington Cemetery in Virginia.  However, they were returned home, and are buried where it all began: Dayton, OH.  You are standing at the Wright Family burial plot, in Woodlawn Cemetery, the final resting place of the 2 most recognizable and impactful brothers in modern history.
