Geocache Description:


The flag of Kansas was designed by Hazel Avery in 1925 and adopted in 1927. She was born December 20, 1892, in Lincoln, Lincoln County, Kansas, the youngest of 8 children. She graduated from Emporia State Teachers College, receiving her degree in music. Early in 1927, Mrs. Avery purchased the Sophie Jorgenson hat and dress shop, continuing in business through more than 16 years. Hazel died unexpectedly on September 26, 1943, in Kansas City, and is buried in the Lincoln City Cemetery, Lincoln, Kansas. The Governor made a proclamation naming July 4, 2025 as Hazel Avery Recognition Day.
