Geocache Description:

Saturday 18th April 2026, 09:30 - 12:30

St Peter's Church

Chailey Green

BN8 4DA

These events have been organised for many years by Martletsman (Ken) usually with plenty of notice; this year is rather shorter notice because of renovation works that have been happening at the church which ran over slightly. Works are now complete and the church would like us to attend once again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

As with any church micro cache or event this will count towards your CM finds total.

--------------------------------------------

Due to the date of this event we all need to be conscious of nesting birds so the church has ask for no hedge trimming!

The following is a list of some of the work to be done:-

1 Remove molehills and fill in animal scrapes on pathways and in grass areas

2 Strim around the shed in car park

3 General removal of weeds and Ivy growing on and around gravestones

4 Overhanging tree branches to prune/lop

5 Remove grass from pathway

6 Dispose/remove cut materials (bonfire?)

7 Shed painting

8 Car park weeding

9 Clear out drainage gulleys around the church

---------------------------------------------------------------

What to bring with you

(a) Gardening Gloves and Stout Footwear.

(b) General gardening tools if you have them, i.e Rake, Secateurs, Branch Loppers, Hand Saw, Shears etc

(c) Scrapers to remove Ivy from Headstones. (Plastic Spatulas or similar)

The work will be done in conjunction with volunteers from the Church Congregation and the Church Wardens.

Tea, Coffee and squash will be provided throughout the morning.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Those of you who have attended previous CITOs at the Church will have witnessed the improvements that Geocachers have been involved with over the years. It's fair to say that without the help of cachers the area wouldn't look as splendid as it does, the church and all the congregation are appreciative of everyone's efforts.

A little about St Peter's Church.

The Church was originally built in 1256 and over the centuries has undergone many building extensions and alterations. The tower is probably the oldest part of the church and is capped by a shingle spire to which a weather vane (in the shape of a cockerel showing the date of 1772) has been added. In 1846 the northern wall of the original church was demolished and replaced with pillars in order that an additional aisle and seating could be installed.  At this time, some of the original features within the chancel were replaced and other restoration work was undertaken. In 1878 the new northern wall was removed and a third aisle added to provide further seating. The pillars that were added in 1846 run east to west from the pulpit, whilst those that were added in 1878 are the furthest from the entrance door.

Recently the interior of the Church has been re-ordered, and the car park extended to allow better and more use for the local community at large.

Even more recently (Jan 26) the floor in the church has been renovated due to decay of under floor timbers, unfortunately works did run over just run a little, hence the lateness of this CITO this year. Church services still took place but at other venues; on 2 occasions the local public house opened it's doors for services!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The event will be followed by a social with hot dogs provided by the church as a thank you for our hard work.  GCBKKQ1
