Thomas Jefferson was one of the founding fathers of the USA, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, elected as the third president of the new republic.
The Jefferson's ancestors has a long history of living in the colonies and Caribbean islands, but Thomas' mother, Jane Randolph, was born here in Shadwell, 1720. Shadwell at the time was a thriving port dealing with much of the new trade from America. Her father was a sea captain from Virginia who happened to be in London with his wife when she was born. Back in Virginia Jane married Peter Jefferson in 1739. They moved to a new farmstead and called it Shadwell after the place where she was born. Jane gave birth to 10 children, Thomas being the third.Â
