The next bit is extracted from a guide about celebrations that take place on the island of Bermuda and adapted to reflect Bedford's Bermuda Island!
Bermuda Day is a public holiday in the islands of Bermuda, sadly in Bedford it is not. Bedford will celebrate this day on Friday May 22nd, 2026. on an island in the middle of Bedford, Bermuda Day is widely considered the first unofficial day of summer on the island and the culminating event of island's annual Heritage Month.
Bermuda Day is traditionally the first day of the year that residents will go into the sea. whether attendees want to take to wild swimming in the river is up to their own intution. It is also traditionally the first day on which BERMUDA SHORTS are worn as business attire (although in recent years, Bermuda shorts are increasingly worn at any time of the year). Many people also see Bermuda Day as the first day on which they can go out on the water after the winter — consequently there is always a rush to get one’s boat ‘in de water’ before Bermuda Day. Maybe the launching of a kayak or canoe or arriving by one would be entertaining
To celebrate the holiday, there is a parade in Hamilton, Bermuda, in our case it will be round the roundabout on the island made by the public footpath. The parade might be popular and those wanting to spectate will have to get there early to stake out particular sections of the footpath to enable them to watch the walkers go past. It is not expected that people will be sleeping there overnight to ensure a prime, spot for the parade!
Bermuda Day in Bedford 2026
The event will start with the unveiling of the Bermuda Flag to briefly change the nationality of the event island to that of the island nation.
For those attending lets join in and wear the attire of the day "BERMUDA SHORTS" get you knees out!
BERMUDA SHORTS, also known as walk shorts or dress shorts, are a particular type of short trousers, worn as semi-casual attire by both men and women. The hem, which can be cuffed or un-cuffed, is around 1 inch (2.5 cm) above the knee.
They are so-named because of their popularity in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory, where they are considered appropriate business attire for men when made of suit-like material and worn with knee-length socks, a dress shirt, tie, and blazer.
True Bermuda shorts are not to be confused with "capri pants" extending below the knee. Cargo shorts may be a similar length but are typically baggy or less "tailored" than Bermuda shorts and more typical of West Coast American fashion.
For those caring to be there, there will be a parade at 18:00 round the circular path on the island for those dressed in Bermuda Shorts and for those with aspirations to win it may need the rest of the look to complete the island look. Remember it is Bermuda Day, Panama Hats might be seen as crossing the border!
