Hagbournes #179 - East Hagbourne War Memorial (Officially Known as War Memorial #2553 ~ East Hagbourne)

The East Hagbourne War Memorial, also known as the East Hagbourne Memorial Cross, is a Grade II listed stone cross located at the junction of Main Road, New Road, and Blewbury Road in East Hagbourne, Oxfordshire. It stands as a permanent tribute to the residents who lost their lives during World War I and World War II.

Memorial Features

  • Design: The memorial is a stone cross with a gabled roof surmounting a column. This column stands on a wide pedestal atop a four-stepped base.
  • Historical Context: Erected around 1920, the cross was likely intended to replace the remains of a medieval "Lower Cross" that stood nearby.
  • Commemorations: It honours 9 individuals from the First World War and 14 from the Second World War.
