> The Pierres-Lachaise <

It is a place of privilege due to the serenity one encounters there, but our purpose is not to describe the multitude of tombs that can be admired. Only the structure itself will be considered. First, the main entrance:

The small entrance near Avenue Gambetta is framed by numerous stones... notably Euville stone, millstone grit, the traditional Lutetian limestone, and also Burgundy stone!

> The different stones <

A. Oolitic limestone is a carbonate sedimentary rock formed by the accumulation of small spheres known as ooids, typically in a shallow marine environment. It features a distinctive texture composed of uniformly sized, rounded grains, creating a clearly visible granular structure. Its composition is primarily calcareous—consisting of calcium carbonate—and is sometimes enriched with fossil fragments. Its color ranges from creamy white to beige, occasionally with slight grayish hues.

B. Euville stone is a calcareous sedimentary rock quarried in Euville. It has a homogeneous texture, with a fine to medium grain and a compact structure. This stone is rich in fossil debris, visible as small inclusions. Its color is generally light beige to cream. It has a low sheen and a matte appearance. It is relatively soft, which facilitates cutting and working. Overall, it offers good durability.

C. Burgundy stone is a calcareous sedimentary rock quarried in Burgundy. It has a homogeneous texture, with a fine to medium grain and a compact structure. Its composition is dominated by calcareous elements, often accompanied by visible fossils. The color varies from light beige to golden yellow, sometimes with gray undertones. The sheen is low, with a matte to slightly satin finish. It is a relatively soft stone, easy to work.

D. Lutetian stone is a calcareous sedimentary rock formed during the Lutetian epoch. It has a homogeneous to slightly shelly texture, with a fine to medium grain. Its structure is compact, often marked by the presence of fossils. The color is generally light beige to cream. The sheen is low, with a matte finish. It is a relatively soft stone, easy to carve.
