Geocache Description:

Log on to “Found It” and send me your answers via the geocaching messaging system (Message Center) or via mail. Be sure to indicate the name of the cache! I'll analyze your answers and contact you if I have any problems.

> Questions <

1. Describe the rock in front of you (texture, grain size, colors present...).

2. What type of erosion caused this shape?

3. Based on your observations, how many rock layers appear to be present?

To validate the Earth you must attach a photo of yourself to your log (it is not necessary to upload a photo of your face) with the stone in the background

You don't need to send me your photo by email, I will contact you if there is any problem.

Any log not accompanied by this photo will be deleted.

> The Sex Stone <

Upon its discovery, it was considered a sculpture dating back to the Neolithic era. However, Ms. Lorenz, a geologist at the CNRS, views it as a purely natural formation. It is believed to have formed during the Late Jurassic period, 155 million years ago. At that time, the region lay at the bottom of an ocean where sandy sediments were accumulating. A natural event—such as an earthquake or hurricane—disrupted the orderly layering of these sediments. A crater formed, expelling water, and the resulting shape subsequently solidified. During the Quaternary period, erosion eventually exposed the form from the limestone of the Pouligny plateau. Once again, science put an end to a wonderful source of imagination.

> Rock excavation process <

  • Karstic erosion: Water dissolves limestone rock. This process creates cavities, caves, and underground networks.
  • Fluvial erosion: Rivers cut into the rock, forming canyons, gorges, and deep valleys.
  • Wind abrasion: Wind carrying sand particles strikes rock formations, sculpting arches or honeycomb-like hollows.
  • Differential weathering: Soft rocks erode more quickly than hard rocks, creating natural hollows and architectural overhangs.
