Geocache Description:

Welcome to the oldest surviving webcam cache in Australia

This cache originally had our geocachers out looking like a bunch of penguins whilst looking for penguins.

Now, you will need be photographed looking out towards Wright Island, where there was also a now extinct population of little penguins.

In 1991, the little penguin population was estimated at 571. The culling of rat and rabbit populations, the elimination of foxes and a reduction in the wallaby population resulted in a significant increase in the population of little penguins. In 2001, two years before this cache was published, the population was estimated to have increased to 1548.

However, possibly as a result of New Zealand fur seal predation or overfishing, the number of penguins had declined to critical levels, with only 26 birds counted in 2022, and a slight increase to 28 in mid-2023. There are other little penguin populations on nearby West Island, which is south of The Bluff (Rosetta Head), and further south in Backstairs Passage, though these have also suffered a decline.

The cache location listed is not where the web camera is situated. Instead, you will need to stand near the additional waypoint listed with this cache. Check the map before heading out

Make sure get your photo taken on the webcam and look like a penguin. The camera links can be found in the Victor Harbor page https://www.victor.sa.gov.au/community-information/sport-and-recreation/boat-ramps/boat-ramp-camera

Your log must include a picture of yourself, or something distinctive to identify your team, from the camera pointing east towards Wright Island, but as a bonus, you might also include one of your team from the camera pointing north across Encounter Bay towards Victor Harbor.

You must post the photo here when logging your find. Selfies alone can not be accepted, and your log will be deleted, even if the camera was not working on the day.

Here are some suggestion on how to capture your photo:

  • Use your smart-phone to browse to the site. Save the image or take a screenshot
  • Call or arrange with a friend to browse to the site and save the image
  • Set up a script to save the image from the site every minute or so, then sort through the photos when you get home (I have done this)
