How Geocaching Works
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
The Abbeys of the Cistercian order are located in rural settings across America and throughout the world.
The Cistercian order was founded in the year 1098 at Citeaux in eastern France. Throughout the centuries, the order has grown dramatically: with monasteries starting foundations the world over. In the United States alone there are twelve houses of monks and five houses of nuns that belong to this order.
The Cistercians, also known as Trappists, follow the rule of St. Benedict: living lives of silence, prayer and manual labor, all the while treating visitors as brothers. They rise in the middle of the night, between the hours of two and three a.m. to sing the first prayers of the day- Vigils, which is the first hour of the divine office. The monks and nuns chant together seven times a day with the "hour" of Compline marking the end of the day. After the abbots blessing, the monks Retire for the night.
