Geocache Description:

Due to its topography and age, Dubuque has many corners and streets which go at angles, in contrast to the typical Iowa town where most streets run north-south and east-west. A lot of the streets in the older, hilly parts of Dubuque intersect at sharp angles.

The coordinates above take you to the sharpest-angled corner or intersection in Dubuque. Here, two streets (in this case, two parts of the same street) intersect at the smallest angle of any place I could find in town. GPS waypoints along the middle of the streets estimated the angle measurement here as 6.3°. Compass measurements along the curbs gave 4-6°. The only other corners that came close were the upper bend of the same street (~10°), and 12th and Grove Ter. (15°).

There is a $20 gift certificate to any Olive Garden or Red Lobster in the cache for first finders. Otherwise, typical cache contents. Good luck!

The clue to the final location is located 11200 feet from the sharpest corner in the direction of the street that makes a larger angle with due north.

The former final location is located N+90 feet from the sharpest corner in the direction of the street that makes a smaller angle with due north. N is the product of the following three numbers:

-The number of letters in the clerk’s first name
-The last 2 digits of the year that many people labored courageously to protect Dubuque
-The last 2 digits of the year Col. Richard ended his term

NOTE: The short distance that both streets extend straight ahead from their intersection before bending or turning makes it hard to get an accurate angle measurement on either one. Due to this, ASSUME the following. The angles aren’t exactly right, but they make the math work out right.

(11Mar06) Due to repeated thievery, the physical cache has been moved to a new location in the general area of the old location. In order to get the new final coordinates from the old final coordinates, assuming the old final coordinates are XXºXX.ABC' N, YYºYG.DEF' W, replace B with B-6, D with D-6, E with E-4, and G with G+1. A, C, and F remain the same.

• The upper section of the street intersecting here forms a 47.55° angle with due east.
• The lower section of the street intersecting here forms a 37.22° angle with due east.
This information makes it unnecessary to visit the sharpest-angled corner coordinates, but it is nonetheless an interesting spot to see.

If you’re interested, the sharpest-angled corner was determined using topo maps, waypoints, and compass readings using the following criteria:

• Both streets must run straight for a significant distance up to the corner.
• Both an intersection and a bend in the same street can qualify.
• Zero degree corners do not qualify. This eliminates parallel streets separated by a wall like Cornell and Montrose Ter., and 11th and Grove Ter.
• Exit ramps and turn lanes, etc. do not qualify as streets.

Please replace cache as you found it. It is a relatively visible location.
