This small speck of land overlooks the site of 2 significant firsts in Navy history. The first battle of iron-clad ships, the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (aka Merrimac) took place within view of here and the battle is commemorated in this spot. Also within sight of here is where the first flight from the deck of a Navy ship took place. There is a marker for that event here as well.
